Moses didn’t have much to look forward to in his world. AIDS had destroyed his family, killing both of his parents when he was very young. His grandparents took him in, but like many families in his community money was scarce and the stress of their lives brought all of them to the brink of utter despair.
School was only a dream – there wasn’t money for fees and Moses had to work so his family would have money for food.
Moses lived a life of drudgery and manual labor.
I had to do work at home so that they would love me,” he said. It wasn’t only the work that made life there so hard, unable to control this desperate young man his grandparents became almost abusive in their attempts to raise Moses.
Eventually Moses ran away. He wandered aimlessly, visiting video halls during the day and sleeping on the street at night. He felt desperately alone and uncertain of what was to come.
But soon that would all change.
One day as he was walking, he saw some people setting up a very large screen for some kind of movie showing. They were showing The GodMan – an animated story of the life of Jesus. Having nothing else to do, Moses sat down to watch. He said, “I saw that Jesus was doing many things. I saw that Jesus was crucified with nails in his hands and legs.”
The Word of God came to life for Moses that day. He was happy when he saw Jesus doing miracles and teaching the disciples; he saw that the people began to believe in Jesus; he cried when he saw Jesus crucified. As the movie ended, an invitation was given and Moses raised his hand and prayed to accept Christ into his heart.
“I saw Jesus doing great things for people. But in my own life, I could only see that people were doing bad things to me. So I decided, let me get saved since Jesus is doing good things for people.” Moses said he feels stronger than before. He said, “God has given me hope...” He has moved back to his grandparent’s home. They have noticed the drastic change in Moses’ life and things have been much better.
Like many families across the continent of Africa AIDS had decimated hope for this family - - but God’s Word changed that! Now they have hope and a future.
He told us, “Thank you very much to you people who brought the story of Jesus - it has changed my life.”
